Overwhelming Majority of Americans Say "Deck The Halls With Boughs of Holly" with 90% Supporting Christmas Decor in Public Spaces
Classic Holiday Traditions See a Boost from Technology 70% Expect to Shop Online As Much or More Than Last Year   Dulles, VA, December 22, 2006 – Religious affiliation aside – 90% of Americans give their seasonal blessings to Christmas decorations in public buildings, according to a recent Associated Press/AOL News poll (http://news.aol.com).    In contrast, nearly half (48%) lean towards more of a non-denominational approach when being greeted by stores and businesses, supporting a more general “Happy Holidays” or “Season's Greetings” customer greeting rather than “Merry Christmas.”  However, there is still a hold out of traditionalists (42%), who believe it is a bad thing for shops to replace the traditional “Merry Christmas” greeting.   When it comes to tradition versus modern technology, survey participants indicated that they are slowly adopting new tech-enabled practices to simplify their holiday activities.  In fact, 38% say the Internet has made it easier to stay in touch with loved ones this holiday season.  Although most Americans (64%) say that they have sent traditional holiday cards by mail this year, a third of adults say they sent a holiday e-mail to a friend or family member this year.    The Associated Press/AOL News Poll also found that Internet holiday shopping is still a vital boon for the majority of Americans (70 percent), with more than half (52 percent) saying that they are relying on the Internet just as much as last year, and 18 percent using the Web even more this holiday season.    Methodology The AP-AOL poll of 1,000 adults was conducted by telephone December 12-14, 2006 by Ipsos, an international public opinion research company.  The margin of sampling error is plus or minus 3 percentage points for all adults.About The Associated PressThe Associated Press is the essential global news network, delivering fast, unbiased news from every corner of the world to all media platforms and formats ...
