SBC Ameritech DSL Internet Service Comes to Homes and Businesses in Areas of Evansville
High-Speed Internet Service Availability Expands Throughout Indiana
Evansville, Indiana, December 18, 2001
Fasten your seat belts Evansville. Like motorists flying along Interstate-64, SBC Ameritech DSL Internet Service* is fueling our need for speed by enhancing the Internet experience through availability to homes and businesses in areas of Evansville.
To meet customers' growing need for bandwidth and faster Internet access, SBC DSL Internet Service, a high-speed Internet access service provided by Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) technology, is expanding its reach. SBC DSL Internet service is now available to 36 percent of the homes and businesses served by SBC in the Evansville area.
SBC DSL Internet Service enables customers to access the Internet or corporate networks at speeds up to 50 times faster than standard analog modems. Unlike traditional dial-up Internet access, DSL Internet Service enables customers to instantly connect to the Internet without the frustrations of busy signals or waiting for the modem to dial-up.
"In terms of importance to our state, we should think of DSL as an exciting new mode of high-speed transportation in Indiana," said George S. Fleetwood, president of Ameritech Indiana. "Just as water, rail, highway and air transportation have been fundamental to Indiana's success over the years, broadband communications is quickly becoming the information superhighway of tomorrow."
To receive service today in Evansville, the phone line running from a customer's home or business to a DSL Internet-equipped central office must be no longer than 14,000 feet, or 2.6 miles, and must meet certain transmission criteria.
SBC Ameritech.net's SpeedPath 768 service now provides downstream connection speeds up to 768 kilobits per second (Kbps) - 25 times faster than traditional 28.8 Kbps analog modems - and an upstream connection speed up to 128 Kbps. For even higher speed, additional SpeedPath options include downstream connection speeds up to 1.5 megabits per second (Mbps) - 50 times faster than a 28.8 Kbps modem - and upstream connections speeds up to 256 Kbps1. Downstream throughput speeds vary, depending on a customer's distance from the central office and other factors.2 Ameritech.net is SBC Ameritech's Internet service provider.
DSL Internet uses the same copper phone lines that run into almost every home and office. Subscribers receive a dedicated connection to their central office, which results in consistent service speeds, and can use a single line to simultaneously access the Internet and talk on the phone. DSL Internet Service enables a variety of applications, including streaming video and audio, distance learning and interactive gaming.
