Cisco Simplifies Router Connections to IBM SDLC Networks
Cisco Simplifies Router Connections to IBM SDLC Networks
MENLO PARK, Calif., Dec. 7, 1992 -- Cisco Systems has
begun shipping a connector that makes it easier to attach its
AGS+, MGS and CGS routers to IBM SDLC (Synchronous Data Link
Control) devices such as front-end processors, cluster
controllers and PC gateways.
Available immediately, the SDLC applique (mounting plate
with connector hardware) eliminates the need for SDLC cluster
controllers to pass through an expensive standalone converter
or be reconfigured for attachment to Cisco routers running
serial tunnel (STUN) or SDLC-to-LLC2 conversion (SDLLC) ...

British Telecom (BT) today announced that they have reached
an agreement to provide customers with a greater choice of
internetworking solutions for today's multitude of complex
communications networks.
Under the terms of the new partnership, BT will become a
worldwide OEM supplier for Cisco's complete line of
internetworking products, including the Cisco AGS+, MGS, CGS,
IGS, 3000, and 4000 multiprotocol routers.

connectivity of existing and new wide area networks (WAN)
services and improve network performance and support for
companies working with IBM System Network Architecture (SNA)
networks.
Chris Shaw, BT's general manager for Local Area Systems,
said, "We recognize that customers' computing and
communications needs vary considerably and different
businesses will adopt individual internetworking solutions.
To ensure effective interoperability between different
networking domains, cooperation among the leading vendors is
essential.
"This new alliance builds on BT's strategy to offer
companies enhanced quality of service backed by systems and
products recognized as being some of the world's best."
To underline the strength of this new partnership, at
the TMA 25 exhibition (November 30 - December 2, Brighton,

Peer-to-Peer
Networking
First Meeting Set for Interop Fall
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 12, 1992 -- The APPI Forum, a group
chartered with developing and promoting the standardization
of Advanced Peer-to-Peer Internetworking -- an open, TCP/IP-
oriented solution to SNA peer-to-peer networking -- has been
inaugurated by 13 leading computer and communications
industry players.
Founding members of the group, the first meeting of
which will take place at the fall Interop conference in San
Francisco, include Alcatel, British Telecom, Cabletron,
Cascade Communications, Cisco Systems, Digital Equipment
Corporation, Hewlett-Packard, Infonet, McDATA, Netrix,
Proteon, SunConnect and SynOptics.
The APPI Forum is based on a concept, put forward last
month by router vendor Cisco Systems, Inc., which combines
the sophisticated internetworking features of TCP/IP networks
-- dynamic adaptive routing, high performance, and support
for multiple media and protocols -- with SNA peer-to-peer
communication.
Michael Zadikian, Cisco SNA product marketing manager
and acting forum organizer, said, "A key element of APPI is
that the specification will be open and free of charge to all
