Cisco Systems Unveils New Modular Router for Regional and Branch Offices
Cisco Systems Unveils New Modular Router for Regional and
Branch Offices
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Sept. 8, 1992 -- A new modular router
platform designed specifically to provide cost-effective
internetworking services in regional and branch office environments
has been introduced by Cisco Systems, Inc.
The Cisco 4000 series of three-slot modular routers allows
cost-effective mixing of Token Ring, Ethernet and serial interfaces in
one chassis.
Three interface module types -- single Ethernet port, single
Token Ring port and dual serial port -- can be ordered in any
combination, allowing the Cisco 4000 to offer a variety of
configurations: two serial ports with one Ethernet or one Token Ring
port for branch offices; two serial ports with two Ethernet or two
Token Ring ports for regional nodes or larger branches; two serial
ports with one Ethernet and one Token Ring port for mixed-media
environments; and four serial ports with one Ethernet or one Token
Ring port to concentrate up to four branches into a regional office.
First Low-End Option for Multi-Media Internetworking
"Until now there have been no truly cost-effective low-end
options for multimedia internetworking that retain high-end modularity
and flexibility," said David Gudmundson, Cisco product marketing
manager ...

New Software Suite for Cisco Systems Routers Preserves Integrity of IBM SNA Networks
New Software Suite for Cisco Systems Routers Preserves
Integrity of IBM
SNA Networks
Key PU Type 4 Properties, Other Features Added
MENLO PARK, Calif., Aug. 31, 1992 -- Cisco Systems has
completed the fourth phase of its five-part IBM internetworking
program, issuing a new suite of router software aimed at preserving
the integrity of IBM SNA networks integrated within router-based
wide-area networks.
Major new features include key IBM PU (Physical Unit) Type 4
SNA properties, NetBIOS name caching, added media conversion support,
performance enhancements and extended SNMP management.
Michael Zadikian, Cisco SNA product marketing manager, said,
"In the first three phases of our IBM program, we focused on
mechanisms that would enable users to consolidate parallel SNA and
router-based networks into a single cohesive internet.
"Phase IV ensures that users of those merged networks,
particularly response-time-sensitive users from the
transaction-oriented IBM world, can bank on the predictability and
reliability they have come to expect ...

Cisco Unveils "Flashy" New Low-End Router Family
Cisco Unveils "Flashy" New Low-End Router Family
Price Cuts on Earlier Line Mean First Full-Function Router Under $4,000
MENLO PARK, Calif., Aug. 3, 1992 -- Cisco Systems has
inaugurated a new router platform with the Cisco 3000, a three-
member family of fixed-configuration, multiport devices offering
standard Flash EPROM memory for easy updating and increased
memory expandability to accommodate network growth.
The new routers complement Cisco's three IGS models, low-end
units with limited memory expansion and no Flash memory, which
the firm has price-reduced by 20 percent to offer the industry's
first full-function multiprotocol router/bridge at under $4,000.
The Cisco 3000 will also provide the platform that enables
Cisco to support Integrated Services Digital Network technology.
Future versions of the Cisco 3000 will incorporate an ISDN Basic
Rate Interface (BRI) into the router chassis, in fulfillment of
Phase III of Cisco's four-phase circuit-switching data
communications strategy.
Three Configurations for Internetworking Flexibility
The Cisco 3000 series offers complete multiprotocol routing
and bridging in three configurations ...

New Performance Standard
MENLO PARK, Calif., July 27, 1992 -- A new four-port token
ring interface card for Cisco Systems' AGS+ router/bridge
provides more than twice the token ring performance of the
industry's previously fastest router/bridge -- enabling the user
to build large, distributed token ring internetworks.
The Cisco Multiport Token Ring Card is based on IBM's 16/4-
megabit-per-second token ring mini-card, which Cisco licensed in
October 1990 ...
