Third-Generation Data Link Switching from Cisco Scales to Multi-Thousand Router Networks, Is Fully Compatible with DLSw Standard
Third-Generation Data Link Switching from Cisco Scales to Multi-Thousand Router Networks, Is Fully Compatible with DLSw Standard SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 14, 1994 -- Cisco Systems has introduced DLSw+, a third-generation Data Link Switching solution that permits the construction of any-to-any networks with thousands of routers -- at the same time maintaining full compatibility with the new DLSw standard and with the industry's most widely adopted Remote Source-Route Bridging (RSRB). Data Link Switching was developed by the Data Link Switching Working Group of the APPN (Advanced Peer-to-Peer Networking) Implementors' Workshop (AIW) as a standard method for integrating IBM's SNA and NetBIOS over the TCP/IP protocol. DLSw+ offers significantly greater functionality than the two earlier generations: RFC 1434, a first-generation interim specification that has been implemented by a number of vendors; and the second-generation DLSw, which obsoleted RFC 1434 when it was completed by the AIW last month, adding such key functions as standardized flow control, circuit prioritization and management. DLSw+: Interoperability Without Compromise Nick Francis, Cisco's director of IBM internetworking, said, "The recently approved DLSw specification is an important achievement because it establishes baseline functionality and interoperability for integrating SNA and NetBIOS into routed internetworks ...

Cisco Enhances Remote Access to IBM Hosts with Two New Router Software Features
Cisco Enhances Remote Access to IBM Hosts with Two New Router Software Features PARIS, Oct. 26, 1994 -- Cisco Systems has enhanced its Internetwork Operating System (IOS) (IOS) with two new software features that make it easier and more cost-effective for workers in branch offices to gain access to IBM host computers. Support for IBM's Qualified Logical Link Control (QLLC) protocol, the mechanism used by SNA devices to connect over an X.25 network, will improve performance on X.25 backbones and let users consolidate traditional SNA networks with newer LAN internetworks. Downstream Physical Unit (DSPU) concentration will allow Cisco routers to assume the PU definition function normally performed by an SNA LAN gateway, reducing WAN overhead and simplifying host configuration. Nick Francis, Cisco's director of IBM internetworking, said, "IBM users have been looking for ways to expand their remote access capabilities without adding cost and complexity to the network ...

New Channel Interface Processor from Cisco Creates ATM-Speed Data Path Between Mainframes and Internetworks
New Channel Interface Processor from Cisco Creates ATM-Speed Data Path Between Mainframes and Internetworks SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 10, 1994 -- Cisco Systems has introduced a high-performance interface processor that provides direct connection at Asynchronous Transfer Mode [ATM] speeds between IBM mainframe computers and routed internetworks, eliminating the need for controller equipment that creates data-path bottlenecks. The new Channel Interface Processor (CIP), operating in a slot of the Cisco 7000 or 7010 core router, lets the user choose either or both of IBM's channel-attachment technologies: the bus-and-tag technology found on the majority of installed mainframes, and the state-of-the-art 17-MB/sec Enterprise Systems Connection (ESCON) architecture used on IBM's newer ES/9000 systems. Modular technology is used to provide two mainframe connections per card: one or two ESCON Channel Adapters for users with ES/9000s, one or two Parallel Channel Adapters for users with legacy bus-and-tag systems, or one of each for users in the process of migrating between the two ...
