COCA-COLA AND CAMP TEEN TO 'STEP WITH IT' TOWARDS RACIAL HARMONY
COCA-COLA AND CAMP TEEN TO 'STEP WITH IT' TOWARDS RACIAL HARMONY
Singapore,
December
05, 2003 -
F&N Coca-Cola will expand its recent successful Step With It, Singapore! program to a 4-day camp for secondary school students, called Camp Teen, organized by the Joint Social Service Centre (JSSC) to promote racial harmony among youth from the four main ethnic groups in Singapore.
Over 350 secondary school students from varying ethnic backgrounds will take part in Camp Teen and the "Step With It" exercise segment presented by F&N Coca-Cola. Each young camper will be provided with a Stepometer and challenged to increase his or her step count during the camp, including the workout sessions in the morning as well as throughout the day. Group prizes will also be awarded for the best performing teams.
Camp Teen is organized by the JSSC, in partnership with four Self-Help groups, namely, the Chinese Development Assistance Council (CDAC), Yayasan Mendaki (MENDAKI), The Singapore Indian Development Association (SINDA), the Eurasian Association (EA), and working with the Association of Muslim Professionals (AMP) and Central Singapore Community Development Council.
Using an Ethnic Adventure theme, Camp Teen 2003 will run over 4 days and aims to:
Promote racial integration and cohesiveness among the youth of the four main ethnic groups in Singapore
Create an understanding of the culture and beliefs of the four main ethnic groups
Provide a platform for participants to bond with members of the other ethnic groups through team building and problem solving activities
Develop youths as individuals with positive character, self-awareness and confidence
Ms June Kong, Public Affairs & Communications Manager of F&N Coca-Cola (Singapore) said, "As one of the most diverse companies in the world, operating in over 200 countries, Coca-Cola is pleased to promote harmony and better understanding between cultures.
"In addition, to have our program, Step With It, Singapore!, as the catalyst to enhance social interaction between the teens is a bonus. We believe Step With It, Singapore! to be effective in generating awareness of one's activity level and the importance of staying healthy. Beyond this, it also provides a platform to inculcate values like personal responsibility, integrity and helping to build group identity."
The Step With It Singapore! initiative, which involved the partnership of Singapore Physical Education Association and Changi General Hospital, was introduced in August this year to address the declining levels of physical activity among Singapore students. The program encourages children to incorporate more exercise into their daily lives using a "stepometer" - small step counters that track the number of steps taken in a typical day. It was first launched in 4 schools and 2 organizations and has proved to be an effective method of encouraging participants to increase their daily exercise to maintain good health.
Camp Teen will run from the 5th - 8th December, 2003 at Sarimbun Scout Camp, 70 Jalan Bahtera, Singapore, 719921.
