Dell Boosts Corporate Notebook Performance, Functionality and Storage
Latitude Notebooks Now Offer More Memory and Module Bay Options, Planning DVD Availability for Q1Round Rock, Texas, December 15, 1998
Dell Computer Corporation (Nasdaq: DELL), led the U.S. PC market in shipments to
medium and large businesses, with a 23 percent share in the third quarter of 1998,
according to market research firm International Data Corporation.
More RAM
Using 128MB small outline dual inline memory module (SODIMM) chips, Dell Latitude
CPi customers now can configure systems with up to 256MB of RAM, doubling the previous
RAM capacity of the CPi. This is important to corporate customers concerned about
implementing newer operating systems and updated applications. One 128MB SODIMM is
available for $499 and the 256MB configuration is $999.
Modular Bay Storage Options: LS-120, Second 6.4GB HDD
Dell also announced the availability of Imation's LS-120 SuperDiskTM as a modular bay option
on Latitude CP and CPi models. It provides 120MB of removable mass storage -- equal to 83
regular floppy diskettes -- in a convenient 3.5-inch-diskette drive form factor. This device
helps free up hard drive space and makes it simple to transport large files -- presentations,
video, digitized photos, detailed graphics or database information - between compatibly equipped
PCs.
The LS-120 drive also doubles as a conventional 3.5-inch floppy drive, providing extra flexibility,
functionality and compatibility. Available immediately for $199, the drive comes with one 120MB
diskette.
Another modular bay storage option for Latitude CP and CPi models is a second 6.4GB hard disk drive.
Combined with an internal 6.4GB hard drive, Latitude offers users up to 12.8MB of internal storage.
Priced at $499, this second hard drive is a bootable device, allowing numerous options for data security
and backup, or for running multiple operating systems.
More Modular Bay Options: DVD Scheduled for Q1 1999
Another internal modular bay option, the new DVD-ROM drive will provide video presentation capabilities.
DVD disks store up to 13 times more data than CD-ROMs, and the DVD-ROM drive also reads traditional audio CDs.
