Dell Expands PowerVault Line of Enterprise Storage Products
Aggressively Priced, Feature-Rich Products To Change Dynamics of Storage MarketRound Rock, Texas, December 7, 1998
Dell Computer Corporation (Nasdaq:DELL), the world's leading direct computer systems
company, today took another significant step in the enterprise storage market with
the introduction of new PowerVaultTM storage products and technologies that round-out
Dell's storage line and serve a full range of differing customer needs. Today's
announcement again demonstrates how Dell's direct-to-the-customer business model
and ability to quickly bring systems to market, provide customers enterprise-class,
feature-rich storage solutions at outstanding value.
The new Dell storage products include the PowerVault 200S, a SCSI-based (Small Computer System Interface)
system for small to medium sized businesses, workgroups or large corporate data centers;
the PowerVault 130T tape library for the backup and storage of large amounts of data;
and the new Dell PowerEdge Expandable RAID Controller 2 (PERC 2), which provides
industry-leading performance and new high availability capabilities to Dell's PowerEdge
servers with SCSI-based storage systems. Dell also announced feature upgrades to its
flagship PowerVault 650F large-scale, high performance storage system.
With the new storage products, Dell today introduced the PowerEdgeTM 4350 server which,
like the recently announced PowerEdge 6350, is designed for customers' data center and
replicated branch environments. These Dell PowerEdge servers are engineered to take
advantage of the new PowerVault storage products, allowing customers to add storage
capacity as their business needs grow or change.
"Today's announcement significantly expands Dell's portfolio of storage products to meet our
customers' varied needs and ensure the integrity of their business-critical data" said
Michael Lambert,
senior vice president of Dell's Enterprise Systems Group.
"Over the past 12 months, we have forged significant relationships
with key industry storage players. Now we are beginning to deliver industry-leading products
that we believe will positively change customers' expectations of their storage provider in
terms of the price they pay and the capabilities they receive."
Today's announcement follows Dell's announcement six months ago of its high-end,
fibre channel-based PowerVault 650F storage subsystem and its intent to compete
in the storage marketplace. Dell's strategy for success in the storage market is
the same as it has been with network servers: provide customers with aggressively priced,
feature-rich, industry-standard based systems for their Microsoft Windows NT® ,
Novell NetWare® and other industry standard environments.
