BROWN & ROOT CONSORTIUM SELECTED AS PREFERRED BIDDER FOR UK MINISTRY OF DEFENCE'S HEAVY EQUIPMENT TRANSPORTER CONTRACT
London - Fasttrax, a consortium led by Brown & Root Services has been selected by the Ministry of Defence as the preferred bidder for the 20-year Private Finance Initiative (PFI) contract for the provision of Heavy Equipment Transportation (HET) services to the British Army. Brown & Root Services is a division of Kellogg Brown & Root, the engineering and construction unit of Halliburton Company (NYSE:HAL).
Tony Pryor, Chief Operating Officer for Brown & Root Services in Europe and Africa said: 'This contract confirms our position as one of the UK's leading defence industry contractors - we look forward to making the HET programme a success through our strong partnering culture and experience in managing large, complex projects.'
Under the contract, worth more than £300m, Fasttrax will provide heavy equipment transportation services to the Army in both peacetime and conflict scenarios. This equipment will replace the Army's current fleet of tank transporters. The HET contract is a 'Pathfinder' PFI project and includes the provision of a service initially based on one third Sponsored Reserves. Brown & Root Services has worked closely with the Ministry of Defence to develop the thinking on the use of Sponsored Reserves and there is a high level of confidence in the ability to provide the HET service in this way. In preparation for delivering the HET service, Brown & Root Services has already carried out extensive market surveys and has interviewed a large number of potential applicants.
'The Fasttrax team has been working together continuously since 1997. The synergies and combination of skills in this team will ensure that the HET mission is in safe and proven hands.' commented Peter Smart, Director of Defence Operations for Brown & Root Services.
The consortium will use the Oshkosh Truck Corporation (NASDAQ:OTRKB) HET M1070F purpose-built military tractor which has a 700 BHP engine, coupled to a seven axle trailer with hydraulic suspension and steering built by King Trailers of Market Harborough. King Trailers is the UK's largest manufacturer of specialist heavy haulage and military trailers, and has developed and tested a new generation of trailer which forms a fully integrated system with the latest Oshkosh European specification tractor. The HET M1070F tractor complies with European legislative requirements and is a derivative of the Oshkosh HET 1070 tractor unit, which is already in service. Ricardo Special Vehicles of Shoreham-on-Sea will carry out European homologation work.
'This is yet another example of Oshkosh's world-class engineering and manufacturing expertise breathing new life and value into heavy equipment transportation. We've taken the combat-proven performance and reliability of the HET 1070, fused it with leading edge technology, to develop a new milestone for performance and versatility," said Robert G. Bohn, Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President of Oshkosh.
