Nokia and Telecom Italia trial converged services
Nokia and Telecom Italia trial converged services
December 07, 2004
Nokia and Telecom Italia are showing solid progress in their joint project to drive forward mobile and fixed network service convergence. The two companies are undertaking the project as part of a Memorandum of Understanding signed in June 2004. The trial phase of the service convergence project has been initiated, with the first deliveries and implementation of key enablers such as multi-radio terminals and the Nokia IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS). The Nokia 9500 Communicator, which uses both GSM/EDGE and WLAN access technologies, is being used in the cooperation project. A key target of the project is the development of VoIP and other services, such as video sharing and push-to-talk, that can be provided over both mobile and fixed networks. Convergence of such services, as well as increased efficiency in network architecture, will bring new and substantial business opportunities for telecommunications groups like Telecom Italia, which operate both mobile and fixed networks. The trial phase of the project will be completed during the first quarter 2005, and will be followed in later in the year by commercial deployment by Telecom Italia of selected solutions and services for the Italian market. "At Nokia, we believe that convergence allows the creation of an exciting new phase for our industry, allowing people to experience a new level of communications and benefit from seamless services - on the move, in the office and at home," said Pertti Korhonen, Chief Technology Officer, Nokia. "We therefore welcome the co-operation with innovative industry players, like Telecom Italia, that are taking decisive steps in shaping the future of converging multimedia communications." The Nokia IP Multimedia Subsystem core network infrastructure enables Video Sharing and other rich multimedia services. Nokia is ready to implement such end-to-end multimedia solutions with open interfaces in collaboration with operators and service providers. Nokia is a world leader in mobile communications, driving the growth and sustainability of the broader mobility industry ...

Nokia plans to start manufacturing mobile devices in India
Nokia plans to start manufacturing mobile devices in India
December 01, 2004
Espoo, Finland - Nokia today announced it has plans to invest in a new manufacturing facility in India to better meet burgeoning demand for mobile devices in the country. Growing mobile penetration in the Asia-Pacific region is expected to be a major contributor to the global mobile subscriber base surpassing the two billion mark in 2006. "India's position at the heart of a rapidly growing mobile communications region makes it an attractive option for establishing our new manufacturing facility," said Pekka Ala-Pietilä, president of Nokia, today during a visit to India where he met with governmental authorities and the media. "The factory would be an integral part of our global manufacturing network and help fulfill growing demand as mobile communications become increasingly affordable and available to more people in this diverse region." Nokia anticipates investing an estimated USD 100-150 million along with its key suppliers over four years once the final investment decision is made. Nokia foresees ramping up the factory gradually and the work force reaching approximately 2,000 employees when production is full scale. The final investment evaluation process is ongoing and is expected to be completed during the first quarter of 2005. Nokia currently has nine mobile device manufacturing facilities around the world. In India, Nokia is the clear mobile phone market leader ...
