Royal Dutch Shell plc and HR Biopetroleum today announced the construction of a pilot facility in Hawaii to grow marine algae and produce vegetable oil for conversion into biofuel.
The announcement is a further step in Shell’s ongoing effort to develop a new generation of biofuels using sustainable, non-food raw materials. Shell Exploration & Production Ukraine Investments (I) B.V. has signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Regal Petroleum plc, to acquire a 51% interest in Regal Petroleum (Jersey) Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Regal Petroleum plc indirectly holding the licences for the Mekhediviska-Golotvschinska and Svyrydivske gas fields in Ukraine.
Under the terms of the MOU, Shell would become the operator of the gas fields which are in the Dniepr Donetsk sedimentary basin where most of Ukraine's gas and condensate production is located. China Ministry of Science and Technology, Shanghai government, Tongji University and Shell Hydrogen today announced the opening of the first hydrogen refueling station in Shanghai for fuel cell vehicles.
The Anting Hydrogen refueling station, located at the International Automotive City in Anting, Shanghai, will dispense compressed gaseous hydrogen for a fleet of fuel cell cars and buses operating in the Shanghai region. The Shanghai government has already helped to deliver dozens of fuel cell vehicles operating in Shanghai, and this is planned to grow exponentially by 2010, including fuel cell buses sponsored by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) through the United Nations Development Programme. Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Ltd. (SPDC), Shell Exploration and Production Africa Limited (SEPA) and Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited (SNEPCO) (together hereinafter referred to as "Shell") announced the intent to improve efficiency and reduce costs, taking advantage of synergies between companies and eliminating duplication, under a project called 'One Shell'.
Under One Shell, there will, for example, be one Production organization, one Development organization, one Projects organization, in addition to the sharing of support services. Basil Omiyi, the Shell Nigeria Country Chair and Managing Director of Shell Petroleum and Developing Company (SPDC) said: "We are operating in an extremely difficult environment where levels of production have been severely curtailed by the security situation for some time, where there is significant upward pressure on costs and where funding issues are having an impact on our operations. Under these circumstances we must take action in order to reduce costs, increase efficiencies and maintain a robust upstream business in the interests of both Shell, our partners and Nigeria in general."
