Lexus To Debut All-New Luxury SUV at the North American International Auto Show
December 17, 2001 -- Torrance, CA -- Lexus will continue to set the trend and
create a new benchmark in the luxury sport utility vehicle (SUV) segment with
the debut of the all-new GX 470 SUV at the 2002 North American International
Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, January 12-26.
Positioned between the car-based RX 300 and the high-end LX 470, the V8-powered,
mid-size GX 470 will give Lexus the unique distinction of being the only full-line
luxury marque to offer three diverse SUVs.

Toyota Motor Sales, USA Announces Corporate Communications Reorganization
Toyota Motor Sales, (TMS) USA today announced
organization changes within its Torrance-based Corporate Communications Division.
The division, previously named External Affairs, has been restructured and renamed
in order to better define its responsibilities and more efficiently direct company
communications.
"The new division title and organization more accurately reflect the broad
base of communications and strategies we develop for multiple audiences, both
inside and outside the company," said Irv Miller, group vice president,
corporate communications.
Along with the name change, the division has been realigned into four primary
functional areas, reporting to Miller:
External Communications, reporting to National Manager Mike Michels, is responsible
for all product news activities for the Toyota and Lexus sales divisions as
well as corporate media relations ...

Toyota Calls for Fairness, Effectiveness and Lead Time In Any New Corporate Average Fuel Economy Standards

In testimony given today before the
Senate Commerce Committee, a Toyota executive called for fairness, effectiveness
and adequate engineering lead time in any changes made to the Corporate Average
Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards.
Quoting a report on the CAFE system prepared for Congress by a National Academy
of Sciences (NAS) panel, Jim Olson, senior vice president of Toyota Motor North
America, said "the NAS report says that any changes should not 'impose
higher burdens on those manufacturers who had already done the most to reduce
energy consumption'.
"Specifically, NAS said that to require each manufacturer to improve its
own CAFE by a defined percentage - the so-called Uniform Percentage Increase
(UPI) approach - 'punishes those who have done the mostand seems
to convey a moral lesson that it is better to lag than to lead," Olson
continued.
Olson also stated that UPI would frustrate effective energy-conservation and
environmental gains by causing higher-fuel economy vehicles to be replaced by
lower-mileage vehicles from producers with lower fuel-economy targets ...
