Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky, Inc. (TMMK) has been recommended to receive ISO 14001 recertification following an audit October 26-28. The audit ensures that the company is complying with the voluntary environmental management standards set forth by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
TMMK received its original ISO 14001 certification in November 1998. Certification
applies for a three-year period, at the conclusion of which, the organization
is reviewed for recertification. Bi-annual (surveillance) audits are conducted
in the years in between an organization's recertification audits.
"Conforming to the ISO 14001 standard provides TMMK a very good checkpoint
for its Environmental Management System, to make sure it is operating effectively
and is aligned with company goals," said Environmental Specialist David
Steedly.
ISO 14001 was first published in 1996 and specifies the actual requirements
for an environmental management system. It applies to those environmental aspects,
which the organization has control and can be expected to have an influence.
Environmental Engineering Manager Jeff Klocke said, "We were very pleased
with the results of this audit. We have made many improvements to our system
during the last year and I appreciate all the hard work each section ISO representatives
put in to make the changes. As a result, the auditors commented that they were
impressed with the level of environmental awareness the team members had in
each area. I would like to thank everyone for understanding and acting in an
environmentally responsible way."
TMMK is Toyotas largest North American manufacturing facility with more
than 7,000 full time team members. It manufactures the Camry, Americas
number one selling sedan, along with the Avalon sedan and the Solara coupe and
Solara convertible.
