Toyota Motor Manufacturing North America,
Inc. today announced that the company has awarded the site clearing contract
for its new San Antonio plant to W. T. Byler of Houston, Texas.
W.T. Byler, which has had an office in San Antonio since 1996, will oversee
the clearing and mulching of trees from 700 acres of the plant site. The mulch
from the trees will be recycled and/or reused. The company will also implement
several erosion control measures.
"W.T. Byler has been an industry leader for 30 years, and we're very pleased
to work with them on this project," said Dennis Cuneo, senior vice president
of Toyota Motor Manufacturing North America, Inc. "Additionally, W.T. Byler
will include approximately 20% minority content in this contract, which shares
our commitment for 20% minority spending on the overall construction project."
In February 2003, Toyota announced that it had chosen a 2000-acre site in San
Antonio to build approximately 150,000 Tundra full size trucks annually, beginning
in 2006. The new plant will represent an $800 million investment by Toyota and
is expected to bring approximately 2,000 new jobs to Texas and indirectly create
work for many more.
Site preparation will begin on the plant site in approximately March 2004,
and general contractors for the project will be chosen by the middle of next
year.
