Toyota and Cascade Partner to Design New Paper Roll Handler Forklift
November 10, 2000 - Columbus, IN - Toyota Industrial Equipment (TIE), in partnership with Cascade Corporation, has introduced its new 7-Series cushion tire paper roll handler (PRH) forklift. The paper roll handler has been designed to address problems that forklift users in the paper industry face, such as overheating, roll clamp structural damage, improper roll clamp operation and low fuel economy.
From a collaborative effort with Casade, a hosing and valve combination, unique to Toyota, has been engineered to ensure the roll clamp attachment correctly receives the specified pressures and hydraulic flows for proper operation, thus preventing overheating breakdowns and increasing productivity.
"The paper industry is one of the roughest applications for a forklift," notes John Koenig, TIE vice president of product development, marketing and training. "The Toyota paper roll handler marks the first time a forklift manufacturer and an attachment manufacturer have worked closely to tackle an issue that has been plaguing the paper industry for years."
The Toyota PRH includes two unique features that have been incorporated into the design of the truck:
Large diameter, internally mounted dual No. 8 hydraulic mast hosing to reduce system back-pressure. This improves fuel economy and reduces engine and hydraulic system overheating.
An integral flow/pressure regulator designed exclusively for the 7-Series' hydraulic system. Typically, larger capacity forklifts (all manufacturers) output hydraulic flows and pressures that greatly exceed the requirements of the roll clamp. Toyota's specially designed flow/pressure regulator, takes the high flow and pressure from the forklift and reduces levels for proper operation of the roll clamp.
Customers can choose from a wide variety of Cascade clamps, including fixed frame short arm, fixed frame position-able short arm and swing frame types. Customers who wish to use their current roll clamp can order the Toyota paper roll handler without a clamp.
TIE Senior Product Planning Engineer and PRH Project Coordinator Martin Boyd explains, "Toyota's paper roll handler takes the guesswork out of correctly matching a roll clamp to a forklift. Our customers in the paper business shouldn't have to deal with overheating and breakdowns any longerPlus," he adds, "the productivity and safety benefits can translate to real cost savings."
In addition to the unique hosing and valve combination, Toyota's exclusive System of Active Stability (SAS) is the first in the world to actively monitor and control the movements of a lift truck to help prevent the vehicle from tipping over. SAS also includes an automatic load-leveling feature that automatically levels the paper roll with the push of a button. This feature is particularly useful for helping to reduce product damage during roll placement. (For more details on SAS, please see the enclosed SAS backgrounder.)
Forklift operators will appreciate ergonomic innovations such as an ultra-comfort
operator restraint seat -- the world's first four-way seat that features an adjustable lumbar support system. The trucks also have generous leg and headroom, and a swing-
down LP tank bracket for easier tank changes.
Another feature on the paper roll handler forklifts is the optional EZ Pedal, which allows the operator to change truck direction with a foot control switch on the accelerator pedal. The EZ Pedal automatically comes with a three-way adjustable full suspension seat and an integrated automotive-style anti-cinch seatbelt. This seatbelt is ideal for paper roll applications, where operators typically spend half of their shift driving in reverse.
Other key features include the following:
High-torque, 4.3-liter, V-6 overhead valve engine, equipped with a standard 2-speed torque converter. The fully automatic torque converter provides two speeds in forward and reverse and smooth transition between low and high speeds. It also prevents operators from starting the truck in second gear.
Optional Travel Speed Control, which allows plant managers to set the maximum travel speed without affecting the lifting and lowering speed of the mast.
Optional Engine Protection System, which automatically shuts down the engine when the system detects low engine oil pressure or high coolant temperature.
Standard hydraulic oil cooler integrated into the radiator.
Optional Box Fin Radiator designed with a special core to reduce the accumulation of dust, lint and debris, while allowing for simplified cleaning of the radiator.
A highly responsive Centralized Hydraulic Power-Assist System (CHPS), which controls tilt, lift, attachment, steering and braking functions with a simple, reliable, single-hose pump design.
Full hydrostatic power steering providing precise control for greater maneuverability.
An optional 3-way catalytic converter to assist in reducing emissions.
Wide-view mast offering an excellent view of the roll clamp.
