Nelson Mandela gives his support to Unilever South Africa programme
02/09/1999 : Nelson Mandela receives winners of Unilever South Africa's education programme scholarships Nelson Mandela, former South African president, has presented 18 of the country's most promising students with the prestigious Unilever Nelson Mandela Scholarships, giving them the opportunity to undertake post-graduate studies in the United Kingdom.The Nelson Mandela Scholarships form a flagship programme under the £4.5 million ($7.23 million) Unilever Foundation for Education and Development, a registered trust which administers the activities and funding of all Unilever initiatives in the area of education and development.Enriching South Africa’s skill-baseThe scholarships aim to improve the quality of life for South Africans through education and training by helping those from disadvantaged backgrounds reach their full potential, thereby bringing much-needed skills to the country.Niall FitzGerald, co-chairman of Unilever, says: "The Foundation brings to life in a very real way, the values expressed in Unilever's Corporate Purpose and is a milestone in Unilever's commitment to education."Addressing the winners of the Nelson Mandela Scholarships for 1999 and 2000, director of Unilever South Africa and chair of the Unilever Foundation, Charles Zwane, said that South Africans had a responsibility to keep democracy alive.The importance of leaders"It is of critical importance that we ensure we have strong leaders for the future in professional, academic and government positions ...
