Honorary doctorate for Antony Burgmans
03/12/2003 : Antony Burgmans, chairman of Unilever N.V., has been awarded an honorary Doctorate of Laws (LL.D.) at Lancaster University in recognition of his distinguished career in business with Unilever and as a leading international figure in the management discipline.

Unilever agrees sale of Ambrosia to Premier Foods

Luxembourg court rules against Irish cabinet exclusivity
24/10/2003 : The Court of First Instance in Luxembourg has today (Thursday October 23) ruled in favour of the European Commission's decision banning Unilever's Irish ice cream business, HB Ice Cream, from seeking freezer cabinet exclusivity for their products in the Irish market.
It is important to recognise though that the Commission's original decision and the Court's ruling apply only to the Irish market. They do not apply to markets elsewhere in Europe.Furthermore it is important for retailers to understand that they are under no obligation to introduce competitor products into HB freezer cabinets and that they are fully entitled to continue stocking exclusively HB ice creams if they feel their interests and those of their customers are best served in this way ...

Unilever trading update
20/10/2003 : Unilever reports continuing strong margin improvement and reconfirms low double-digit growth in earnings per share (beia) for the year but with growth of its leading brands now expected to be below 3%.
Earnings growthFull yearStrong operating margin expansion through restructuring and procurement savings programmes continues to be the key driver of earnings growth for the year.At the start of the year the company showed it had created headroom in its operating plans to enable delivery of its targets and to respond to what was seen as a more challenging business environment.The after tax profit impact of lower than planned sales is offset by additional procurement savings (€100 million after tax) as previously set out at the half year and benefits in tax management flowing from the Path to Growth programme enabling a beia tax rate at the bottom end of the 30–32% rate given as guidance for the medium term. Each percentage point improvement to the beia tax rate is worth €70 million after tax profit.Total brand investment is expected to be ahead of 2002, with Advertising and Promotions (A&P) at a similar level but with an increase in trade and consumer price related promotions which are netted off sales in reporting turnover. Unilever donates prize money to initiatives concerned with sustainable agriculture
25/09/2003 : Unilever has decided to double the Royal Award for Food Innovation prize money to €40 000 and to donate it to three initiatives that encourage sustainable agriculture:
A study of the sustainability aspects of agriculture by Wageningen University,The 'Duurteelt' (Sustainable Cultivation) Foundation, which promotes sustainable agriculture in the Netherlands by providing knowledge to farmers free of charge,The Blijdorp Thandiza Foundation, which supports small-scale projects in Africa and promotes public awareness of the need to conserve the natural world and its communities.
